Uncle Sam & Steak

This cartoon is about the Spanish-American War. It is about the U.S. having so many counties to take over after winning this war. The cartoonist's message in this cartoon is that Uncle Sam has many different countries on the "menu". He is deciding on which to take over first, Cuba, Puerto Rico, The Philippines, etc. Some one can think that gaining all these countries is a good thing, but by taking these countries, we are destroying the independence of other now free countries. The Spanish-American War was started because Cuba and other Spanish colonies wanted independence. One technique used in this cartoon is an analogy, the menu in this cartoon is a list of all the counties the U.S. has the rights to but does not own, Sam can order them any time. Another technique use in this cartoon is symbolism, all the countries are depicted as food that can be ordered. This cartoon is anti-imperialism because these newly freed countries are being thought of as a menu item to the U.S. A country that can be taken over at this very second. I believe that that is a bad thing.
