Hawaii sandwiches

This cartoon is about the U.S. taking the Hawaiian Islands. It shows Uncle Sam "eating" the Hawaii Islands(aka: Sandwich Islands). The cartoonist is trying to show Uncle Sam taking these islands for himself. He gets there first and wants to see them before other countries do. The annexation of the Hawaiian Islands is a bad thing. The U.S. pretty much over through another country's government, does that sound good to you? Irony is used in this cartoon, Uncle Sam has a fork and the bottom reads, "Excuse me-you fellows will please stand back while I try these oyster sandwiches myself". Symbolism is used to show that the Hawaiian Islands(Sandwich Islands) as sandwiches that Uncle Sam wants to eat. Uncle Sam is just taking this country without asking asking and is keeping other people from it.
