Panama Canal
This cartoon is about the construction of the Panama Canal. Columbia wouldn't let Roosevelt build the Panama Canal, so he fought in the Panama rebellion. The cartoonist depicts Roosevelt as ready to build the canal. He has a shovel, and many weapons to fight a war, just so he could get access to Panama and build the canal. The Panama Canal was useful for the U.S., but it put Columbia into huge dept after. Sure it gave sailors and military easier access to the different oceans, but we went through a war just to get that. One technique used in this cartoon is exaggeration, Roosevelt looks ready for war, decked out with guns. Labeling is used a lot in this cartoon, the board Roosevelt is walking on is labeled "Roosevelt Doctrine". This is anti-imperialism because Roosevelt is prepared for war, he is not thinking twice about going to war because he knows the U.S. will win. He does not think about the consequence that can possibly happen to the U.S. and other countries like Panama and Columbia.
