Choking Colombia

This cartoon is about the Panama Canal. It shows how far Roosevelt is going to build the canal. The cartoonist’s message is that Roosevelt is willing to kill Columbia just to get Panama. Also, Uncle Sam is waiting in the back to dig the canal. You can’t think differently from the idea that this is an anti-imperialism cartoon. Roosevelt is about to kill the Colombian leader. This cartoon uses exaggeration to be persuasive, Roosevelt isn’t just going to KILL the Colombian leader, he is just mad that Colombia won’t give him the area. Irony is used too, the cartoon represents a war Colombia can’t win as Roosevelt choking them. This represents Roosevelt as a bad person who is going through extreme measures just to get this small stretch of land, don’t you think the U.S. could have just bought it? The face of the Colombian leader looks in much pain, and Uncle Sam is happy, that is evil.

Panama or Bust

This cartoon is about the Panama canal. It pictures President Roosevelt in a wagon that says Panama or Bust. The cartoonist is trying to show that Roosevelt is being very careless when riding to Panama. He is running over big rocks that are labeled problems that the U.S. might come across. The Panama Canal helped the U.S., it let us have an easier access to the different sides of The Americas. I can see why the Panama Canal is a good thing, but our path to get there was harsh. Labeling is used quite frequently in this cartoon, the rocks are labeled as things that stop the U.S. from building the canal, and there are a few much smaller labels. Symbolism is also used a bit in this cartoon, mainly that the rocks in the way of Roosevelt represent the problems that can stop the U.S. from building the canal. This cartoon is very anti-imperialism, Roosevelt is just barreling over things like “International law” and “Colombian protest”. This cartoon shows that he will stop at nothing to build the Panama Canal.

Hawaii sandwiches

This cartoon is about the U.S. taking the Hawaiian Islands. It shows Uncle Sam "eating" the Hawaii Islands(aka: Sandwich Islands). The cartoonist is trying to show Uncle Sam taking these islands for himself. He gets there first and wants to see them before other countries do. The annexation of the Hawaiian Islands is a bad thing. The U.S. pretty much over through another country's government, does that sound good to you? Irony is used in this cartoon, Uncle Sam has a fork and the bottom reads, "Excuse me-you fellows will please stand back while I try these oyster sandwiches myself". Symbolism is used to show that the Hawaiian Islands(Sandwich Islands) as sandwiches that Uncle Sam wants to eat. Uncle Sam is just taking this country without asking asking and is keeping other people from it.

Panama Canal

This cartoon is about the construction of the Panama Canal. Columbia wouldn't let Roosevelt build the Panama Canal, so he fought in the Panama rebellion. The cartoonist depicts Roosevelt as ready to build the canal. He has a shovel, and many weapons to fight a war, just so he could get access to Panama and build the canal. The Panama Canal was useful for the U.S., but it put Columbia into huge dept after. Sure it gave sailors and military easier access to the different oceans, but we went through a war just to get that. One technique used in this cartoon is exaggeration, Roosevelt looks ready for war, decked out with guns. Labeling is used a lot in this cartoon, the board Roosevelt is walking on is labeled "Roosevelt Doctrine". This is anti-imperialism because Roosevelt is prepared for war, he is not thinking twice about going to war because he knows the U.S. will win. He does not think about the consequence that can possibly happen to the U.S. and other countries like Panama and Columbia.

Boxer Rebellion

This cartoon is about the Open Door Policy and what started the Boxer Rebellion. These different countries are all taking different pieces of China. The cartoonist is trying to say that the U.S. opened China's trade routes to everybody, and now countries are trying to take different parts of China. Other people could think that the Open Door Policy was a good thing to the U.S., and it was. It helped us obtain access to more markets and raw materials, but it was also a bad thing because other countries tried to take advantage of China, making this a bad thing. Symbolism is use a bit in this cartoon, the other countries taking over China are people that have scissors and are cutting out their parts of China. This is a very bad thing, some countries cant just come in to another and just start claiming land for themselves, it's a bad thing and should not be done. It is morally wrong to do what is being done in this cartoon.

Seward's Folly

This cartoon is about the mistakes of William Seward purchasing Alaska from Russia. People at the time thought purchasing Alaska from Russia was a terrible idea. The cartoonist's message is that Alaska is just a big chunk of ice. Nobody wants Alaska because it's really cold and there is nothing but ice. I couldn't imagine a pro-imperialism opinion on this cartoon. The faces of Johnson and Seward do not look happy carrying this giant block of ice. One technique used in this cartoon is labeling, the giant block of ice is labeled as "Russian America" and the wheel barrel is a treaty. The cartoonist also uses irony saying that Alaska is a giant, worthless chunk of ice that President Johnson has to carry around. The cartoon is anti-imperialist because it pictures the purchase as worthless. Seward had just wasted the government's money on a huge chunk of ice and snow.

Hands off!

This cartoon is about the Roosevelt Corollary. It exaggerates that Europe nations can not come over to our side of the hemisphere. The cartoonist is trying to say that the U.S. passed the Monroe Doctrine not as a joke. The European nations continued to come over to the western hemisphere. There are not many reasons to think differently from this cartoon's anti-imperialist appeal. There aren't many claims you can make against this cartoon's appeal, Roosevelt is pointing a gigantic canon at this man's face. Exaggeration is used in this cartoon because Roosevelt has a giant canon that says Monroe Doctrine on it, and he is pointing it at this European's face. Labeling is also used a bit in this cartoon, the canon represents the Monroe Doctrine and the European man is holding an envelope that says "claims" on it. This cartoon is anti- imperialism because it shows how far the U.S. is going to keep Europe out of their business. The U.S. is basically stopping Europe from interfering with the problems in the Americas, just to do that themselves.

Uncle Sam & Steak

This cartoon is about the Spanish-American War. It is about the U.S. having so many counties to take over after winning this war. The cartoonist's message in this cartoon is that Uncle Sam has many different countries on the "menu". He is deciding on which to take over first, Cuba, Puerto Rico, The Philippines, etc. Some one can think that gaining all these countries is a good thing, but by taking these countries, we are destroying the independence of other now free countries. The Spanish-American War was started because Cuba and other Spanish colonies wanted independence. One technique used in this cartoon is an analogy, the menu in this cartoon is a list of all the counties the U.S. has the rights to but does not own, Sam can order them any time. Another technique use in this cartoon is symbolism, all the countries are depicted as food that can be ordered. This cartoon is anti-imperialism because these newly freed countries are being thought of as a menu item to the U.S. A country that can be taken over at this very second. I believe that that is a bad thing.
